Has the frequency of autism been increasing over the years?

The number of cases being diagnosed over the past 50 years has increased steadily but that does not necessarily mean that the prevalence of the condition is increasing in the global population. The more likely explanation is that an increase in awareness regarding the disorder has led to more children being correctly diagnosed at an early age.
