Frequently Asked Questions
How are Autism Spectrum Disorders diagnosed?
Diagnosing autism is slightly complicated since there is no physical test, like an X-ray, to determine whether a child has autism. It can be diagnosed by a doctor or a teacher who has specialised training or prior experience in the area. Only a physician or psychologist can make a formal diagnosis. The doctor will need a detailed history of the child as well as of the parents. They will also observe the child’s behaviour and ask questions regarding it, such as their interaction with strangers, making eye contact and their speaking skills. Then they will make a diagnosis about where the child falls on the spectrum if they do. Sometimes signs that look like autism are symptoms of other developmental problems, and the doctor can help make that distinction.
